For those of you who haven't seen it, Tara Parker-Pope write a nice article on obesity in the latest issue of NY Times Magazine (1). She discusses research showing that the body "resists" fat loss attempts, making it difficult to lose fat and maintain fat loss once obesity is established.

LAYER UP!
Brrr!! I think we are definitely feeling the cold this week. I made a joke on facebook saying that I should throw on some thermals & a snow suit today and then post it on here. I was actually half joking because if I had a snow suit I think I really would have worn it! I might even need to stock up on some thermals this winter too! My next post will be how to rock thermals with leggings and booties lol. Just kidding :)
But in all seriousness, the best way to stay warm during these extremely cold days is to layer up!
The key though is to do enough to stay warm, but not too much that you look bulky and messy. Unless it's below 0 and you could care less what you look like :)
Here's some different ways that you can layer up & still be fashionable!
If you're going out for the night and need to dress up, you can still pile on the layers. Try wearing a long sleeve dress with some stockings and booties. On top of that, put on a long sleeve cardigan & a scarf. Obviously you can take these items off when you get to your desired location. Longer length coats are great for the winter and of course make sure to wear some gloves!!
For a daytime look, go with some skinny jeans & a long sleeve tee. You can wear a faux fur vest over that with a snood to make sure your neck stays nice and warm. Put on some thicker socks and knee length boots. This will definitely keep the lower part of your body toasty. Put on some gloves, hat, and a cozy coat! This is a real trendy look.
Another casual outfit to layer is a pair of leggings with knee high socks. But on a pair of combat style boots and then scrunch the socks down so they come just above the boots. Put on a long sleeve shirt and then wear a sweater or long cardigan on top of that. Wear it with a snood or scarf, and then try a long parka style coat. Also wear a hat and gloves if necessary!
If you're in the mood for some sweats and a hoodie, make sure to wear a pair of leggings under your pants. Sweats can be really thin as you know and the cold air goes right through them. Wear it with a long sleeve graphic tee, hoodie & scarf or snood. I don't wear uggs, but if that's your style then you can pair them with those, or some sneakers like Jordans or Converse... whatever your preference! But wear some thick socks!! Gloves and a jacket too of course.
I've got to head into the city soon for dance class so I will most definitely be layering up tonight!! Stay toasty dolls xoxo

80s baby.
I got the aldo sneakers that I have been wanting & of course I had to wear them today! This look has a bit of a retro/80s feel. It's something different than what I normally wear, but I really like how it came out. This year is all about trying out new things & that includes fashion.
I created this set yesterday around the sneakers and I was able to pull it off today with a few minor changes. This is the first time I've worn something that I created from a fashion set. It's nice to bring these ideas to life. Feels good!
I have on liquid leggings, a "SAY IT OUT LOUD" long tee, faux leather jacket, winter hat & fringe bag all from H&M. I swear I should get paid from this store for promoting them so much! Of course I'm wearing my Maxwell kicks from Aldo, geek chic glasses & Russian Red lipstick. [Sidenote: check out my new Marc Jacobs iPHONE case!]
I've got my arm candy on: Michael Kors watch, & two black bracelets. I'm wearing these hanging cross earrings that I found at Forever 21 and my Juicy Couture ring.
Hope you're all having a great day lovies xx Naty

It's cold but really sunny out so I had to put on my ray-bans! Feeling real funky today :) Black on Black! Love.

WHO WHAT WEAR
I'm always inspired by different celebrities & their ensembles as I'm sure most of you are too. Some of my fashion icons right now are Kourtney Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, Lauren Conrad, just to name a few. I also love the fashion on TV shows like Gossip Girl, 90210, & of course Sex & The City. Obviously we don't have the kind of money that they have, but that doesn't mean we can't put together something similar that we can afford. I decided to do "WHO WHAT WEAR" on a weekly basis of my recreations of different celebrity outfits. I did the best I could to find items that were very similar and inexpensive but some of these pieces are still a little pricy. I hope that you like my recreations & maybe get a little bit of inspiration to try one of these out or even recreate your own looks!

High-Fat Diets, Obesity and Brain Damage
Many of you have probably heard the news this week:
High-fat diet may damage the brain
Eating a high-fat diet may rapidly injure brain cells
High fat diet injures the brain
Brain injury from high-fat foods
Your brain cells are exploding with every bite of butter! Just kidding. The study in question is titled "Obesity is Associated with Hypothalamic Injury in Rodents and Humans", by Dr. Josh Thaler and colleagues, with my mentor Dr. Mike Schwartz as senior author (1). We collaborated with the labs of Drs. Tamas Horvath and Matthias Tschop. I'm fourth author on the paper, so let me explain what we found and why it's important.

Among the many questions that interest obesity researchers, two stand out:
- What causes obesity?
- Once obesity is established, why is it so difficult to treat?

Hello 2012!
Happy New Year loves! Tomorrow is already the 2nd. Crazy. I hope that you all had a great time celebrating. I know that I definitely did :) One of my best friends had a NYE party at her apartment in the city last night and it turned out great. I loved not having to spend so much money or be in an overly crowded club or bar. It was cozy and a perfect way to bring in the new year.
I literally went on a mission to get this dress. I saw it at Zara online and I knew that it would be perfect for me. Last week I went to 3 different Zara stores and none of them had the dress. I found something else at BEBE & bought it but I wasn't really happy with it. It was more for a club & I knew that I wouldn't really be comfortable wearing it at an apartment party. This one was more classy & I love that. So on friday, I decided to head out to the city and hit up 5th ave once again to double check the Zara stores there. The first one didn't have any, but the second one did! Just as I was about to give up, I spotted the last one on the racks in my size. It fit perfect and I know it was meant to be! I love finding the last one of something that I want. I always feel like it was waiting there for me. So I returned the BEBE dress and got to wear this one :)

I really love one sleeve dresses. This is a metallic silver lace dress with little hints of gold sparkle. The pictures don't even do it justice. I'm wearing my Shoedazzle pumps with rhinestones on the heels, chandelier earrings, 2 silver rings & one of my favorite bracelets. I put on MAC Russian Red lipstick and of course it made a huge difference. I have to say also that as much drinking, eating, & talking I did last night, this lipstick did not smudge or fade once. Pretty impressive.
This is my best friend Vanessa. She was the hostess last night. She wore a very pretty floral asymmetrical dress also from Zara. And these were the mango martinis she made!
I'm really looking forward to everything this year will bring me. I have a feeling it's going to be a good one. But I'm ready for whatever it brings, whether good or bad. I hope you all are too! They say that the way you start off the year is how it will end. Whatever happens, I know I will be in good company. xx Naty
Junk Free January
Last year, Matt Lentzner organized a project called Gluten Free January, in which 546 people from around the world gave up gluten for one month. The results were striking: a surprisingly large proportion of participants lost weight, experienced improved energy, better digestion and other benefits (1, 2). This January, Lentzner organized a similar project called Junk Free January. Participants can choose between four different diet styles:
If you've been waiting for an excuse to improve your diet, why not join Junk Free January?
- Gluten free
- Seed oil free (soybean, sunflower, corn oil, etc.)
- Sugar free
- Gluten, seed oil and sugar free
If you've been waiting for an excuse to improve your diet, why not join Junk Free January?
