What Causes Insulin Resistance? Part IV

So far, we've explored three interlinked causes of insulin resistance: cellular energy excess, inflammation, and insulin resistance in the brain.  In this post, I'll explore the effects on micronutrient status on insulin sensitivity.

Micronutrient Status

There is a large body of literature on the effects of nutrient intake/status on insulin action, and it's not my field, so I don't intend this to be a comprehensive post.  My intention is simply to demonstrate that it's important, and highlight a few major factors I'm aware of.

Day & Night: Pink & Black

When I start wearing a new color, I have a habit of buying all these other clothes that are the same or a similar shade.  I swear I do it subconsciously though! My theme for this weekend was Pink & Black.  I didn't plan on it but that's how it worked out.

Yesterday was a beautiful day.  It was actually a little warm outside (such a tease for January!) I had to go out for a few different things and I wanted to take advantage of the warmer weather.  I didn't even wear a jacket yesterday.  I put on my high waisted skinny black pants, pink button down from H&M, and my Shoedazzle spike flats "Lita". I've got on my MK watch, JC ring, H&M bracelet and my glasses :) I wore very little makeup.  I don't like wearing that much during the day.

While I was out, I found these amazing pink trousers from H&M and I actually got them 50% off :)  There's nothing like finding a great piece for an even greater price and they were the last ones in my size. They fit AMAZING!  I honestly don't have another pair of pants that fit like this.  They go right to my ankles too which is great because I'm so short and don't have to worry about hemming them :)

I had recently bought this black Zara top and I wanted to find something different that I could pair it with.  You can't really see it in the pictures, but the sleeves are puffy.  It's similar to the green Zara dress I wore Christmas Eve.  I had a housewarming party to go to last night and I wanted to take advantage of being out and get dressed up.  So I decided to wear the pants & top :)

My accessories are my MK watch, gold finger ring, black & gold shoulder bag from Forever21, and these gold chandelier type earrings. My shoes are from Shoedazzle, the ones I've posted before with black stones on the heels "Mirage".

Yesterday was a great day.  I got a lot of compliments on my new trousers :) and on this blog!  I love knowing that so many different people are checking out my posts daily & getting inspired to try new things.  I hope that you all enjoyed this beautiful weekend!! xx

What Causes Insulin Resistance? Part III

As discussed in previous posts, cellular energy excess and inflammation are two important and interlinked causes of insulin resistance.  Continuing our exploration of insulin resistance, let's turn our attention to the brain.

The brain influences every tissue in the body, in many instances managing tissue processes to react to changing environmental or internal conditions.  It is intimately involved in insulin signaling in various tissues, for example by:
  • regulating insulin secretion by the pancreas (1)
  • regulating glucose absorption by tissues in response to insulin (2)
  • regulating the suppression of glucose production by the liver in response to insulin (3)
  • regulating the trafficking of fatty acids in and out of fat cells in response to insulin (4, 5)
Because of its important role in insulin signaling, the brain is a candidate mechanism of insulin resistance.

What Causes Insulin Resistance? Part II

In the last post, I described how cellular energy excess causes insulin resistance, and how this is triggered by whole-body energy imbalance.  In this post, I'll describe another major cause of insulin resistance: inflammation.

Inflammation

In 1876, a German physician named W Ebstein reported that high doses of sodium salicylate could totally eliminate the signs and symptoms of diabetes in certain patients (Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift. 13:337. 1876). Following up on this work in 1901, the British physician RT Williamson reported that treating diabetic patients with sodium salicylate caused a striking decrease in the amount of glucose contained in the patients' urine, also indicating an apparent improvement in diabetes (2).  This effect was essentially forgotten until 1957, when it was rediscovered.

What Causes Insulin Resistance? Part I

Insulin is an ancient hormone that influences many processes in the body.  Its main role is to manage circulating concentrations of nutrients (principally glucose and fatty acids, the body's two main fuels), keeping them within a fairly narrow range*.  It does this by encouraging the transport of nutrients into cells from the circulation, and discouraging the export of nutrients out of storage sites, in response to an increase in circulating nutrients (glucose or fatty acids). It therefore operates a negative feedback loop that constrains circulating nutrient concentrations.  It also has many other functions that are tissue-specific.

Insulin resistance is a state in which cells lose sensitivity to the effects of insulin, eventually leading to a diminished ability to control circulating nutrients (glucose and fatty acids).  It is a major contributor to diabetes risk, and probably a contributor to the risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and a number of other disorders.

Why is it important to manage the concentration of circulating nutrients to keep them within a narrow range?  The answer to that question is the crux of this post.

Pink Delight

When I was in the city last week, I went to H&M on 5th and spotted this sweater I wanted.  I have the same one in creme that I wore Christmas weekend.  I got it a size bigger so it would fit more loosely.  It makes it more comfortable that way.  Most of my sweaters are at a longer length, so I really like this style.  I said one of the things I wanted to switch up this year was adding more color to my wardrobe, so why not start with some pink? :)

I've got on these light blue jeans from Forever21, grey boots from Mandee, H&M sweater & winter hat.  When I'm wearing bold or bright colors on top, I like to go with neutral tones for my shoes.  When I'm wearing neutral colors on top, I like bold/bright hues on the bottom.  I think it's good to bring attention to one or the other.  It's fun to switch it up though.

I love these hats.  I keep adding more of them to my outfits.  They're great winter accessories. For an extra splash of color, I went with this pink & purple Juicy Couture scarf that I actually forgot I had.  I really like the mix of pink & purple together.  My other accessories are a silver charm bracelet, my big white stone ring & silver studs. Very simple.  Then I put on some of my favorite lip gloss from MAC, Pink Poodle.

It's already Friday.  The first week of January kind of flew by quickly.  I hope that you all enjoy your weekend and don't forget to smile!!
Lots of love xx Naty
